The unique pressures of a surgical career put surgeons at particular risk of mental health conditions. However, surgeons worldwide often seek less help than their physician counterparts. It may be that there is an actual low prevalence rate of mental health issues among surgeons, perhaps because surgeons tend to have characteristics that protect them against developing mental health problems. Or it may be that surgeons’ training and their personalities give them the resilience to cope with occupational stress. Another reason may be that surgeons find it more complicated than other doctors to present for care, as there may be more of a risk to their careers if they disclose mental health concerns. In a survey of almost 8000 US surgeons, (1) burnout, anxiety, and depression were reported by between 30% and 50% of respondents. The panel will discuss all of the above and explore the options for surgeons.
